Dr. D’s Drought Diary: Week 1, Entry 1

When in Drought put MLS Tubs Out! Another week of waiting on the rain to come, the grass that was once green is turning brown fast and it leaves us wondering if our cow herd is getting the nutrition they need.

Drought stricken forages have reduced levels of key nutrients for optimal cattle performance. Cows with spring calves are bred back and now responsible for gestating and lactating. All the while, summer grass is not holding up its end of the bargain to supply the nutrition your cows need to wean off growthy and healthy calves. It may be early in the drought so no need to make any snap decisions yet, but it is a great time to get something in front of cattle now to help them manage through.

Supplemental protein and fermentation additives in MLS tubs like the #1 Hi Performance or #3 Energy Cake with extra protein can help stimulate ruminal fiber digestion and overall forage utilization. With the grass losing its nutritional value tubs can help cattle get the most out of what they are grazing!

Continue to follow along in Drought Diaries Series for more tips on managing your cow herd through this seasonal weather challenge! Talk to your local MLS Territory Manager today to find the best product to fit your supplementation needs. If your pastures are dry you should give MLS tubs a try!

Note: MLS Tubs are a supplement formulated to improve nutrient extraction/utilization from a forage based diet and are not intended as a replacement to forages.  If pastures become limited in available forage, cattle should be moved to new pastures with adequate grazing or offered supplemental forages.
